Military Pay

Well will we or won't we?
That seems to be the circulating question with about a hundred different answers! One source says we will get paid just not on the 15th of April it will be posted on May 1st as back pay. Another source says we will receive half of our pay on the 15th of April and the rest will come after the budget is hashed out. Yet another source states only those in a combat zone will get any kind of pay on the 15th of April and someone else believes there will be no change to our pay at all. Some are also saying nothing will be affected until May. I do not claim to know which answer is right, frankly I don't think anyone knows which answer it is going to be at the moment.

Right now I am just so thankful that we are able to live off of the pay we received on April 1st. We wrote up our budget so that our mortgage and all of our utilities along with our food budget and blow money were covered by what we get paid on the first. The give portion of our budget is also covered by the pay we receive on the first. I took it to heart when I read in one of Dave Ramsey's books that you should prioritize your budget so that necessities come first. What a blessing that is this month! We also have a very nice emergency fund in place so that if our pay is affected on the first of the month we will still be able to pay all of our bills. Our family will not go hungry and the lights will stay on praise God! I also know that we are very lucky in this respect because the majority of military families can not say the same.

Even when we are not facing a possible government shutdown it is a good idea to have an emergency fund in place. Lets face it military finance is predictable only in the fact that it is very good at messing up military pay. Sorry if you work in finance but you know it is true and we know you don't do it on purpose. Any change or circumstance during your military career could cause a problem with your pay from Tech School, a PCS, a TDY, a deployment all the way to you not paying your Military Star Card plus many others which is why you should be prepared. Ideally you should have at least 3 to 6 months worth of expenses set aside in a basic savings or money market checking account. If you have debt of any kind big or small I would highly recommend that you read "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. It changed our lives, actually it has changed thousands of lives and it makes inconveniences like a government shut down not so catastrophic to our day to day lives.
