Family time fast forward days 10&11

I am sitting here trying to remember yesterday! I do remember reading the Bible I just can not recall the discussion we had afterwards. Ah yes now I remember bread and donkeys!

We read 1 Samuel 16 when God tells Samuel to stop his mourning for Saul and anoint the new King. We got to meet David last night "A man after God's own heart" is how he is often described. A warrior, a musician, a prayer and a killer of giants. He feared nothing on this earth. He loved God! He also served under the man he was destined to replace as king.

Questions covered by my crew.
Why did Saul want to kill Samuel? Because he was evil, he was no longer with God he was tormented. They really have a hard time understanding that there are evil people in this world, people who will kill you for doing what it right.
Why did David take a donkey and bread? Ha ha my answer well he had a long way to go and they did not have cars back then. David was a smaller guy so he could hop on that donkey and take it for a ride if he wanted to. The donkey carried his luggage and his food. The bread is food for David to eat on his trip.
Just one loaf of bread? How big was it? How far was the trip? I got a little liberal on that one telling them they made bread huge back then. Of course that was met with how huge, what size? Good grief I need a clay/stone oven and some old fashioned bread!

Prayer for health, obedience, good thoughts, growth and Gods blessing ended our time. I am enjoying our time together. Even on crazy nights the time we take to focus on reading the Bible and prayer is wonderful.

Tonight we took a trip into the future reading Psalms 56-57 written by David when being captured and pursued by his enemies. I took the time to explain that in the future Saul learns that David is to replace him as king and tries to kill him. The Psalms were written to be sung to the tune of songs I have never heard of, but to me they are like prayers. David is crying out to God knowing God is for him all he has to do is ask and his enemies will be no more. His faith in God is extraordinary. He has put his life literally in God's hand proclaiming "what can man do to me?". He sings praise to God knowing Saul is seeking him out to kill him. David seemed to have insight into the heart of God, he knew God had a purpose for him and nothing would stop that purpose from being fulfilled.

The best question tonight came from Skylar she wants to know how Saul knew David was to become king? What a great question! One I can't answer! I do not remember so we have the fun of reading more another night and finding just that out. I can not wait.
Hunter liked that the traps set for David instead backfired on his enemies.
The conversation then turned to families, love, where babies come from... I did happen to mention that David is the great great great and so on grandpa of  Jesus which started the whole conversation. It was a good opportunity to explain God's purpose in creating man and woman and how they become one in marriage.
Hunter wanted to know how God knew He wanted more people on earth. I used a good Star Trek quote God wanted us to live long and prosper! Yes I do have a sense of humor and can actually see God wearing Spock ears and saying just that with the whole Vulcan peace sign going on. Yes, I am a dork. Hunter also asked about divorce not such an easy thing to explain to a 9 year old. It happens and it is sad. It is very important to choose the right spouse, to pray about that choice. More explanation will come as they get older.

Very good night! Lots of good information, choice morsels of the Word if you will. No long prayers tonight quick and simple as it was Wednesday night with two karate classes lasting past 7pm for the four older children, then dinner and bed. We cram in the reading while the older three eat. Us standing in the kitchen with all the children at the dinner table. Not conventional, not always ideal, but for us it works.
