To sum up our family time tonight my Facebook status says it all:
" I think Brent and I had way to much fun reading the Bible to the kids. Acting out Jonathan and the armor bearer climbing a cliff and killing people. It was awesome ha ha. Brent read the devotion part and the prayer =D Saaaweeeeeet!! All the kids prayed tonight even Kady! She blessed all her bubbies (stuffed animals). It totally rocked! Spending time in the word as a family just kills the devil so if you want to be a demon slayer you totally gotta try it ;-)"
Today was so much easier. My mind is clearer. I feel happy.
We started the day talking to our three oldest kids about money. At our house work ethic is very important. We really want to impress upon them how important it is to work hard and earn money and we want them to know what to do with the money once they have it.
We went over their individual job lists and how it is their responsibility to not only do the jobs but check them off on the list each day so they can get paid.
We then talked about giving we want them to give 10% of what they earn each week to the church. We talked about how the church uses the money we give to them. Skylar was pretty sure they send it all to Jesus. So we explained the church has a budget just like we do and the church takes care of its people, all people by helping them when they are in need.
We talked about saving. They all have a $2000 goal set for the purchase of their first car so we also would like them to save at least 10% each week towards that goal.
Then we covered short term savings goals and spending. They will get to decide what they want to spend their spending money on and just how much they need to save to get what they want. Skylar wants to save $100 plus so she can buy an American Girl doll, Liberty is saving for a beach doll and Hunter wants a video game he can play with dad. Having goals motivates them to do their work and earn the money.
Last we went over fines. You see not only do we expect them to work hard we also expect them to behave. They are fined .15 cents each time they do a behavior that is not appropriate such as lying, disobeying, screaming or lashing out in anger and so on. This helps them think before they act and it teaches them that there are long term consequences for bad behavior.
Lots of lessons were learned today!
Dinner was awesome! We tried veggie burger wraps. Everyone enjoyed them and we realized that Brent and I are no longer able to eat as much as we used too. Perhaps an nice side benefit from this whole experience.
Church tonight was wonderful, the sermon was so good. There were a few distractions though so we are hoping to catch the live recording at some point during the week to hear what we may have missed. Pastor Ferrel talked about different reasons to fast. He had us rolling with some great jokes and went over Bible stories that I both loved and some I had forgotten. If you would ever like to watch one of his sermons online check it out at The Bridge.
Tonight we read from 1 Samuel 14 which was really all about Jonathan. We took our time reading it acting parts out and answering any questions along the way. Why did God like Jonathan? Well Jonathan left his victory up to God, he knew it was God who would win the battle not him alone. Can I just say Jonathan rocked! He had his focus on God, had no fear and used his brain. He had sense about things his father did not. Is it bad to eat blood? Um yes especially back then because it was a sin! Another great question was why did Saul fight so many battles? We got to talk a bit about the history of Israel and how when they fought and lost it meant they lost everything. Saul took on the responsibility of avenging Israel he was winning back what Israel had lost over the years. Only it seems he lost focus on the true Winner of the war, he was getting a bit big on himself. Just what I am observing don't take my word for it go read it too and let me know what you think.
Brent took the initiative to read the devotion tonight which is so cool. It is so great for the kids to see daddy take an active roll in our growth, our spiritual growth as a family. I am probably beaming right now. I can't help it I love seeing my husband lead!
Then we had each child pray. Hunter did not want to pray at first so we had Skylar start and then Hunter was ready. Liberty prayed forever!! I think she got in the entire nation, the world, her school, all extended family and maybe a couple animals. It was sincere and that is what matters she really put thought into what she was asking of God saying please after each request. Justice keeps it short, sweet and simple. He just wants to have a great day! For Kadynce we have been putting our hands on her and praying for her but tonight she said Amen too? So I helped her pray starting with Dear Jesus and going on from there she added in a prayer for all her bubbies and already had the Amen down. It was such a blessing to watch out one year old pray! I mean how cool is that? She wanted to pray too! I am so proud of her. Brent and I both lifted up our requests to the Lord. We are trying to lead by example teaching our children how to live. Brent ended our time by reading the prayer that is part of the devotion.
Tonight was such a blessing from the Lord, our time together is so precious and we are really trying to do better jobs as parents. We are seeking Gods direction, we want to do this right. I am especially grateful for this experience. God is so good!!
